With so many cleaning products on the market it is easy to imagine that getting rid of common carpet stains and keeping your carpets clean is a difficult task. And depending on the make-up of your family, you might very well see dirty carpets every day. If you have young children, pets, a partner who works in a dirty environment; all of these can add to the daily dirt on your carpet. These surface particles like dirt, dried mud, pet hairs are relatively easy to clean with a decent vacuum cleaner.
However, there are more stubborn marks that can be difficult to remove. From fruit drinks, red wine, coffee, blood and mud, there is a solution to every carpet mark or stain. The one exception is burn marks so be really careful with fireplaces and smoking.
Here we address some of those stubborn marks and how to remove them.
Some Common Misconceptions About Carpet Cleaning Agents
If you look online, you will see plenty of tips for cleaning carpet stains.
Some of the most common ideas revolve around using white vinegar and baking soda. However, many of these actually do more harm than good. Many times we have been asked to look at carpet stains where people have tried to remove them by using either or both of these in combination. And in most cases, the problem has been “fixed” into the carpet fibres, and we cannot do anything about it.
Another common idea is to use dishwasher detergent to clean
For coffee, wine, pet urine, vomit and most other issues that can cause a stain, it is much better to leave it. You can clear the actual debris or particles then soak up the excess moisture. As you are clearing up, be sure not to rub the carpet fibres. Instead, dab the carpet using a paper towel to absorb any moisture. Call us as soon as you can, and we will be able to treat it for you before it becomes set in the carpet.
One tip you can use though is if chewing gum is dropped on the carpet. Freezing it will make it brittle so you can then lift it off the carpet. That is one Internet tip that does work.
The most complex has been saved for last. Trying to remove ink can go terribly wrong and a small spot can turn into a large stain. Removing ink stains will require some serious carpet cleaning skills and patience.
There are two compounds in your home that will effectively remove the ink stain: isopropyl alcohol and acetone, i.e. nail polish remover. The key to lifting the ink from the carpet fibres without spreading the problem is to be precise and patient. Do not soak the entire area, just apply a little alcohol or acetone on a clean cloth and apply to the affected area. Then carefully pull the ink out with a paper towel. Again, do not rub the mark but dab it.
It is important to note that both of these cleaning products can adversely affect your carpets colouring. Try them out on a small corner to make sure they will not harm the fabric or its colours before beginning. Because isopropyl alcohol is the gentler of the two, it is better to begin with this and use acetone at the very end.
